About me
So I'm sure many of you are wondering who's behind this site and why they've chosen to talk about something that we all consider to be a very private matter out in the open.
I've suffered from IBS for as long as I can remember though I was only finally diagnosed with it about two years ago. I think back and remember all the times that I've had to make up an excuse because I'm "feeling a bit off" to the times when you're actually having to run off!
I guess I'd managed well enough up until a couple of years back when my IBS took a turn for the worse. It wasn't a sudden thing. In fact, when I cast my mind back it's really difficult to pinpoint a moment in time where I knew something was wrong. I guess I realised something had to be done when the holiday I was planning fell by the wayside and no longer interested me. There was indeed a problem!
After several frustrating visits to the doctors and consultants I was finally diagnosed with IBS. I remember quite clearly being told not to worry myself with the finer points of IBS and just to play around with my diet until I found something that worked.
Having been "playing around with my diet" for the better part of 18 months, this was not what I wanted to hear! So I turned to the Internet and found myself overwhelmed by the information and so called help for IBS sufferers.
At this point I was struggling. Nothing that I changed seemed to be working and it was getting increasingly frustrating. It was then I took a more proactive approach and started contacting medical professionals about my condition. People who cared and who had a specific interest in IBS.
This was the turning point. I soon realised that we're all different. Even IBS sufferers. No one sufferer's symptoms are the same. Having finally started to begin to manage my IBS better I decided it was time to help share the knowledge I had gathered and hopefully help other people.
If you read nothing else on this website then please read this.
Take ownership of your condition. It’s your IBS and it’s particular to you. Only you can develop a strategy that’s suited to your condition and that you can implement and fine-tune as you need.
You’re not alone. It may seem a distant dream at the moment but by making small, carefully planned changes you can improve your IBS just like many other sufferers have.
Together we can share our experiences and victories. Together we can successfully manage our IBS.
Matt
